What to Bring
What do we have to bring for the jungle trekking?
When preparing for your jungle trekking adventure, pack light and bring only the essentials. Most accommodations offer lockers for your bigger bags, so you can leave your suitcase behind in Bukit Lawang. Here’s a checklist of must-have items for your trek:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing and long socks
- Long trousers and a light sweater for the evenings
- Comfortable walking shoes and water shoes for river crossings
- Flip flops or sandals for the campsite
- Swimwear and towel for refreshing jungle baths
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Organic toiletries, toilet paper, and personal medication
- Camera, smartphone, flashlight, and power bank
- A refillable water bottle (at least 1.5 liters)
Packing light will ensure that you can move freely during the trek, while these items will keep you comfortable in the jungle.
What to Expect
What wildlife can I expect to see during the trek?
During your jungle trek, there’s a chance to spot orangutans, although sightings aren’t guaranteed, as they roam freely in the wild. Our trek routes pass by the old orangutan feeding area, increasing the likelihood of seeing semi-wild orangutans. Besides orangutans, you may also see Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, gibbons, various bird species like hornbills, and even snakes. The wildlife in Bukit Lawang and Gunung Leuser National Park is diverse and ever-changing, making every trek unique.
How difficult is the trekking?
The difficulty of the trek varies depending on the trail and your fitness level. We tailor the difficulty to match your preferences. If you’re new to trekking, don’t worry; we can guide you on an easier route. For those seeking more of a challenge, we offer more strenuous hikes. Be sure to discuss your expectations with your guide to ensure a fun and comfortable experience.
How do the campsites look like?
For multi-day treks, we set up basic jungle campsites equipped with bamboo frames, waterproof covers, and comfortable bedding (mattresses, mosquito nets, and blankets). There’s a shared kitchen where our cooks prepare delicious meals, and you’ll enjoy your meals together in a friendly atmosphere. Each campsite is located near a small stream or waterfall, allowing you to refresh with a cool jungle shower. Toilet facilities are basic but functional, and each campsite is chosen for its tranquility and beauty.
What time will we start on the first day and will we be back on the last day?
Your trek will typically start at 9:00 AM after breakfast. On the last day, you will return to Bukit Lawang in the afternoon, around 2:00-3:00 PM, depending on factors like weather, animal sightings, and breaks along the way. We recommend not booking a flight on the same day as your return, as the trek might take a bit longer than expected. If you already have a flight booked, contact us in advance, and we will adjust the schedule to make sure you’re back on time.
How high is the trekking, what is the altitude?
The trekking takes place at an altitude of 300 to 500 meters above sea level. The terrain is mostly hilly but not overly steep, offering a moderate challenge with beautiful views along the way.
How long is the trekking?
Trekking distances vary, but expect to walk about 5 to 7 kilometers per day. This includes time for wildlife observation, breaks, and lunch. The trekking duration is approximately 5 to 6 hours a day. Depending on guest preferences, weather, or safety concerns, the pace may be adjusted.
How big is the group?
To ensure a high-quality experience, we limit group size to a maximum of 6 people. This allows for more personalized attention from the guide and a more intimate trekking experience.
